Nikolai Gogol’s Novel, written in the first half of the 19th century, tells us the story of sufferings of the "little man" Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin, for whom the acquisition of a simple thing – an overcoat – becomes the object of coveted passion, a source of joy and grief.
The play "The Overcoat" begins with the birth of a person. From his first cry. Women- midwives in eager rivalry suggest to name the baby sophisticated names, predicting it in the future his great mission. So a new inhabitant appears in Petersburg: Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin.
... The "great future" of Akaky Akakievich has come. He is in one of the departments as the titular counselor, rewriting the documents. But Bashmachkin does not just copy official papers, he is a real Artist, a Poet of calligraphy. It is not without reason that the calligraphy is called the art of beautiful writing. Naive as a child, Bashmachkin lives in his world of letters and words. He diligently traces out equal lines and does not notice anything around. He does not notice that he is in love with him the landlady Anisya. Does not notice that colleagues envy and laugh at his reverent attitude to the business. They reproach Akaky Akakievich for his unsightly appearance in an old, worn overcoat, and even intimidate him for this dismissal from service. And for Bashmachkin to lose service means to lose the meaning of life. And he goes to the tailor to order a new overcoat…
In our play Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin is a dreamy young man, a creative person. It is difficult for him to adapt to the world around him, where people are the "cogs" of a large state mechanism…
